There are a wide number of statistics and studies that have been conducted in regards to wellness and activity levels.   

Some notable research conclusions are:

 • The estimated annual health care costs in Canada directly attributable to physical inactivity are $5.3 billion. (Health Canada)

• Regular physical activity reduces the risk of Type 2 Diabetes and Colon Cancer by 50%, and plays an important role in reducing the risk of other chronic diseases. (Journal of American Medical Association, 1992; Journal of National Cancer institute, 1991) 

• Even moderate regular activity, such as a brisk walk, delivers significant health benefits. (Cooper Institute, 1989)

• Regular physical activity reduces stress and promotes psychological well-being. 

• Over 2/3 of Canadian children are not active enough for optimal growth and development. (CFLRI, 1998)

• The average child spends 3-5 hours a day watching TV alone, and Canadian children are among the highest in the world in time spent playing video games. (Canadian Medical Association Journal)

The Cost of Physical Inactivity in British Columbia - A 27-page report prepared for the B.C. Ministry of Health full of statistics on the cost of physical activity on businesses and the tax payer.  Excellent resource to see clearly the need for prevention programs.

The Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute (CFLRI) conducts research, monitors trends and makes recommendations to increase population levels of physical activity and improve the health of all Canadians.

Campbell River residents state that Lack of Time (26%) is the main barrier to participating in physical activity. Walking is the number one physical activity choice in Campbell River and 51% of the surveyed population walk regularly.
